Musical feast in the Middle East

Let’s start at the beginning, shall we?

A few months ago, I was approached to do an Exclusive Set for a 5-star resort, somewhere I had to get out Google Maps to find.

Doha, Qatar.

I wasn’t even sure how to pronounce the name, let alone begin to know where it was. Forgive my ignorance when it comes to the Middle East. It has always been a place of mystery and a basin for modern-day media.

Doha, Qatar – pronounced Ka-tar – finds itself right in the middle of the Persian Gulf. It is its own small country, an almost island of sorts on the water, with more riches that the average person can imagine. Doha, meaning ‘big tree’ is the capital city of Qatar scaling a mere 51 square miles. Toronto is almost 5 times that size!

I spent a lot of time researching Doha to see who my audience may possibly be and found the Internet being somewhat disappointing for results. It became apparent that Doha had a newer scene made up of people who were likely working there from other countries. The majority of Qatar’s inhabitants are expats and from communications, I learned Doha was becoming very ‘Westernized’, possibly because they are hosting the 2022 Fifa Cup. So I made my mix imagining I was on The Rootop in Doha playing it personally. And I guess that went over well because a month or two later I was signing a contract to go play there.
